Activity history

The institution was governed by five trustees appointed under the trust disposition and deed of settlement, dated  1847, of Allan Glen, a wright of Glasgow who died in  1850.

In 1872, the trustees drew up a deed of constitution, the chief provision of which was the addition to the trustees of 4 ex officiis members to advise and assist the existing trustees in the management of the institution. The new members were the Lord Provost of Glasgow, the Lord Dean of Guild of Glasgow, the Deacon Convener of the Trades House and the Minister of the High Church Parish of Glasgow.

In 1876, under the terms of the Allan Glen's Institution Act of that year, the trustees were incorporated and again enlarged, this time by the addition of representatives of Glasgow University and Glasgow's mercantile and trading community. These changes enhanced the trustees and added academic prestige. They were empowered to make, vary and rescind byelaws, rules and regulations for the management of the school. They held one ordinary meeting each year and extraordinary meetings as appropriate. They caused minutes to be kept of all their meetings as well as registers of the names of all trustees present.

In 1887, the government of the school passed to the governing body of the newly formed Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. This body, however, included four governors elected by the trustees of Allen Glen's Institution thereby ensuring continuity. Finally, in 1912, the government of the school passed from the control of the Technical College to that of the School Board of Glasgow.
