Activity history

Students of the College first became involved in the government of the University in 1892 when the College became the Women's Department of the University. The students henceforth became matriculated students of the University and were therefore entitled to vote at the election of the University Rector. The Rector was mainly concerned with representing the students on the University Court.

In 1894, a Students' Representative Council was established specifically for the women students of the University. Its aims were to represent the students in such matters as affected their interests, to afford a recognised means of communication between the students and the University authorities and to promote academic and social unity among the students. The Council was placed on the same footing as the University men's Student Representative Council but was a completely separate organisation until 1898 when the two were amalgamated.
