Governors of Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College 1887-1912

Oral and written examinations were conducted at the school throughout the session by the headmaster and teachers to test the pupils' progress. Those pupils who reached the appropriate standard were awarded a junior certificate by the trustees. In addition, from 1879, the pupils began to sit the examinations of the government department of science and art. By the early 1880s practically every pupil in the school sat them and success in these examinations remained the principal aim of the school until 1900 when pupils instead sat the recently established Scottish Education Department leaving certificate examinations. Administrative arrangements for both these external examinations were made by the headmaster with the support of the secretary.

Entrance examinations for admission to the school as well as examinations for school scholarships were also conducted. Under the terms of the Allan Glen's Institution Act of 1876, the school became fee-paying and the trustees established annual competitive examinations for the award of exhibitions entitling the holders to free education at the school. In 1887, the system was continued by the governors of the technical college. The 1876 act also empowered the trustees to send scholars of merit, at the expense of the trust fund, to sit English or Scottish university local examinations.
