Activity history |
Until 1901, the School followed the national curriculum for government schools of art, known as the South Kensington System, run by the Science and Art Department. The Department had its own Examination Board, which set and conducted all examinations and issued certificates. The works of all students were forwarded annually in April to South Kensington for inspection and for awards in the national competition. Timetables for the examinations, which were held each year in May at the School, were published in the School prospectus. The results of the examinations were recorded in the minutes of the Committee of Management (renamed Board of Governors in 1892). In 1901, the school became the Central Institution for Higher Art Education in the West of Scotland. It was now academically independent with the power to award its own diplomas subject to the approval of the Scotch Education Department (renamed the Scottish Education Department in 1918). From now on, therefore, the School had no connection with the English Board of Education and its system of examinations. The governors were now authorised by the Scotch Education Department to grant diplomas and certificates to students. Diplomas were awarded on the results of courses of instruction together with special tests and bore the official endorsement of the Department. The examinations for the diplomas were held in May and conducted by the governors and staff, in conjunction with an assessor appointed by the governors and approved by the Department. From around 1908, examination and class results were both reported to and discussed by the Staff Council, a recently created body whose remit was all matters relating to students. From 1925, the Board of Studies took over responsibility for examination regulations and arrangements including resits. In 1973, the Academic Council replaced the Board of Studies and, through its examination committees, was responsible for the conduct of all examinations in the School, determined the procedure for drafting, moderating and approving examination papers, reviewing arrangements for security of examination papers, supervising arrangements for invigilation of examinations. |
