The registration of students was handled by the Secretary's Department. The process was known, however, as matriculation and students were required to matriculate at the beginning of each academic year. As part of matricualtion, they had to take the University oath or sponsio academica, by which they were bound to abide by the rules and regulations set by the College's Court and Senate. By matriculating, students became full members of the University of St. Andrews.
