The registration of students was handled by the Secretary's Department. The process was known, however, as matriculation and students were required to matriculate at the beginning of each academic year. As part of matricualtion, they had to take the University oath or sponsio academica, by which they were bound to abide by the rules and regulations set by the College's Court and Senate.

Between 1885/1886 and 1889/1890, students of the College were eligible to matriculate at the University of St Andrews as extra mural students of science, and from 1890/1891 to 1894/1895 as members of a constituent college of the University of St Andrews. During the years 1895/1896 and 1896/1897 no student of the College could matriculate as a student of the University of St Andrews. From 1897, students of University College Dundee again matriculated as members of a constituent college of the University of St Andrews.

It appears that matriculation of Conjoint Medical School students took place in University College, Dundee even though students of the Conjoint Medical School were full members of the University of St Andrews and not University College Dundee.
