Activity history

At the University of Strathclyde, registration was initially known as enrolment and was part of matriculation. The Ordinance concerning matriculation and the regulations concerning matriculation and enrolment, later registration, appear in the University's calendars published annually. Ordinance No.1: Matriculation, established at the University's foundation, stated that matriculation was the admission to student membership of the University. Under the Ordinance a candidate for matriculation had to have passed an examination approved by the Senate as qualification for matriculation or have been exempted therefrom by the Senate. On matriculation a student was required to pay the University the fees prescribed and sign a register of students. The matriculated student was to enjoy certain rights and privileges of the University, was bound to promote the interest of the University and to submit to the jurisdiction of the Senate.

The Regulations for Matriculation, also known as the General Regulations of the University for Admission to Degree Courses, ruled that candidates be aged 17, or reach this age in the first term of entry to the University, and that they be eligible, that is, have passed the appropriate examinations or have the relevant qualifications to satisfy the necessary requirements. By session 1969 these regulations were renamed Entrance Requirements and have been amended over the years.

The Enrolment Regulations ruled that enrolment of students as members of the University took place before the commencement of the academic year and a condition was that students should undergo an x-ray examination of the chest. From 1968 enrolment was called registration and the regulations were renamed the Registration Regulations. From the 1969 session all students were required to sign a declaration that they would abide by the University Ordinances and Regulations, and only certain students were required to undergo an x-ray examination. From 1971 the regulations concerning registration were renamed Registration and Other Regulations and incorporated what had been the Other University Regulations, previously listed separately.

In 1974 there were some additions to the Registration Regulations. All students were required to register in each year of their prescribed period of study and to pay fees and other sums prescribed by the Court; all students commencing their period of study after the beginning of the academic year were required to register in accordance with instructions issued by the University; any student failing to pay the required fees could be barred from registration in any subsequent year.

In 1977 Ordinance No.1 was amended. It was retitled Student Membership of the University. The term matriculation was abandoned as it was no longer in use in any of the regulations and was regarded as meaningless in terms of University practice at the time. The amended Ordinance stated that every person admitted to a course of study was a member of the University through the whole period of the course; any student holding a sabbatical office in the Students' Association would be deemed a student member of the University until the end of the academic year in which their period of office ceased; the names of student members of the University were to be registered by the University, the procedure being prescribed by regulation; Student members enjoyed certain rights and privileges as members of the University, promoting the University's interests and conforming to the Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations of the University, and submitting to the jurisdiction of Senate; a student who requested to have their membership withdrawn should still complete the registration procedures and observe the Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations as if they were a member.

As a consequence of the changes to Ordinance No.1 the regulations surrounding registration changed. They were renamed Regulations Governing Registration for Student Membership of the University and General Regulations affecting Student Membership. In addition to existing regulations the following were introduced; every student on accepting admission to the University, and annually when being registered shall sign a declaration that he will abide by the University Charter, Statutes, Ordinances, and Regulations; registration under the University's Regulations confirms admission or renewal of student membership of the University, if any student is not registered they are not entitled to attend a course of study; at the discretion of the University the following may register without personal attendance, subject to payment of the prescribed fees: students following courses other than degrees or diplomas, part-time students and students not in attendance at the University (including students under suspension, students undertaking study outwith the University as a required part of their course, postgraduate students who have completed their required period of residence but not yet submitted a thesis, and students holding a sabbatical office of the Students' Association.
