The School's Committee of Management and subsequently its Board of Governors had the power to appoint and set the remit of committees to carry out particular aspects of its work. The Committee of Management and the governors were also supported by the Staff Council. This was in existence from at least 1908 and its remit was all matters relating to teaching, students and staff. It had various committees including one established in 1925 for the direction of studies which appears to have become the Board of Studies whose remit was to advise the Director on the discharge of duties relating to academic development, standards and course content. The Board of Studies was replaced in 1973 by the Academic Council when the Board of Governors was directed by the Scottish Education Department to establish an Academic Council with responsibility for academic development, maintenance of standards and proper conduct of courses. To some extent, this was a change of title for the Board of Studies but it was larger than the Board of Studies and had various committees and working parties for dealing with matters in detail. The Council's remit was the overall planning, co-ordination, development and supervision of the academic work of the School.
