Activity history

In the late 1930s a constitution was drawn up for the establishment of a Students' Representative Council. It was to be a means of communication between the student body and the School authorities. The constitution was accepted and the Council established in 1941. A new constitution was adopted in 2001. The stated purpose of the Council was to communicate the views and wishes of members of the School's Student Association, comprising all matriculated students of the School, to the School's management, governing body and external organisations. The Council managed the Student Association.

A School Council was established in 1969 to satisfy the increasing desire of the students in the 1960s for representation. It was a forum where an equal number of governors, staff and students could meet to discuss any matter of concern. It was a purely advisory body but could raise any subject with or even submit recommendations to the Board of Governors, the Academic Council, the Staff Association or the Students' Representative Council.

Students were also represented on various school bodies. The president of the Students' Representative Council was a member of the Academic Council, established in 1973 with responsibility for academic development, maintenance of standards and the proper conduct of courses. In 1974, the president became a governor of the School ex officio and students were given the right to appoint a governor from their own number.
