Activity history

Although no evidence has been found, it is assumed that academic appeals were originally handled by the Headmaster (renamed Director in 1909) and the Committee of Management (renamed Board of Governors in 1892). The Secretary and Treasurer provided administrative support for any academic appeals. In 1943, the Registrar took over this duty.

From around 1908, appeals fell within the remit of the Staff Council, which was responsible for discussing class and examination results and judging students' end of term work. After 1925, it fell within the remit of the newly created Board of Studies, which was responsible for overseeing the promotion of students from year to year and examination resits. In 1973, the Academic Council replaced the Board of Studies, and took over its responsibility for handling academic appeals. The Council appointed a Students' Progress Committee whose remit included discussing the success or failure of students and deciding on examination resits. In 1978, it appointed an Appeal Committee, comprising the Director, the heads of departments and the Secretary and Treasurer. Appeals to it could be made only on grounds of procedure not the academic judgement of the Examinations Committee. Appeals had to be made in writing through the relevant head of department and the Academic Registrar. The appeals procedure was revised in 1980.
