Activity history |
Student discipline was primarily the responsibility of the Headmaster (renamed Director in 1909) and the teachers. The ultimate responsibility, however, rested with the Committee of Management and from 1892 the Board of Governors. The Secretary and Treasurer provided administrative support for any cases of student misconduct, a duty later taken over by the Registrar. From around 1908, discipline also came within the remit of the Staff Council, a body which discussed all matters relating to students. After 1925, it came within the remit of the newly created Board of Studies, responsible for the maintenance of academic standards, and in 1973 to its successor the Academic Council. In 1974, a code of student discipline was introduced and the Academic Council Discipline Committee was established. The code stated that all students of the school were subject to the jurisdiction of the Academic Council in respect of their studies and their conduct. All complaints regarding the conduct of students were to be made to the Director who could either deal summarily with them by issuing a reprimand or refer the complaint to the Registrar who then reported it to the Discipline Committee. The Committee could then delegate the matter to the Director if the case could be dealt with adequately by a reprimand or hear the case itself. Penalties available to the Committee included reprimand, suspension, exclusion and expulsion. The Registrar acted as clerk at all meetings of the Committee. In serious cases of misconduct, the Director reported the matter to the next meeting of the Board of Governors' School and Staff Committee. The governors then took appropriate steps to enforce the penalty. Any student could appeal to the governors in writing via the Registrar. The governors could remit the appeal to an Appeal Committee. The more serious cases of student misconduct were recorded in a discipline book kept by the Director. It was the responsibility of the Academic Council to ensure that all entries in the book, except those relating to expulsions, were destroyed after the student concerned had left the school. |
