Activity history

Responsibility for fixing the terms of admission of students originally rested with the Committee of Management. This responsibility was transferred to the Board of Governors when they replaced the Committee of Management in 1892. The headmaster and teachers originally handled admission applications. In 1873, administrative support for admission applications was provided by the newly created post of Secretary and Treasurer. In 1943, responsibility for organising admissions passed to the newly created post of Registrar. In 1973, the Academic Council was created whose remit included admissions policy. The Academic Council approved an admissions policy, and responsibility for its implementation and monitoring fell to the Academic Council Admissions Committee. In line with the policy, each course programme had a designated Admissions Officer with specific responsibility for admissions processes and procedures. Responsibility for establishing, monitoring and reviewing entry requirements and selection criteria for individual programmes rested with the relevant programme leaders and the School Boards of Studies.

From 1993, the formal offer and acceptance process for undergraduate programmes was administered by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), followed by a letter from the School Registry offering a place.
