Robert Cochrane Buist ( 1860-1939) was born in Dundee, in 1860, and educated at Dundee High School. He studied medicine at the University of St. Andrews, graduating MA, and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, graduating BA. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduating MD and MRCP. He also studied briefly in Vienna. In 1889, he worked as a General Practitioner in Dundee, before serving as Assistant Physician at the Royal Edinburgh Asylum. In 1898, Buist was appointed Lecturer in Clinical Midwifery and Gynaecology at University College, Dundee, a post he held until his retirement in 1925. He was Secretary of the Dundee Branch of the British Medical Association from 1894, and President of the Student's Representative Council. Buist held a number of postions in Dundee. He was Consulting Obstetrician to Dundee Royal Infirmary and Royal Infirmary, Perth. He was also Chairman of the Central Midwives Board for Scotland, and Chairman of Dundee Crematorium. Buist died 5 February 1939. |
