John Maxwell Brown ( 1908-1979), was born in Clydebank on 28 October 1908, and in due course proceeded to the University of Glasgow where he took a first in Philosophy in 1933. Aided by the James Ferguson Bursary and the John Clark (Mile-End) Scholarship, awarded to him on the recommendation of the Faculty of Arts, he went to Queen's College, Oxford where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He spent a short tome at the University of California at Berkley and returned to Scotland in 1936. Brown was assistant in Moral Philosophy at St Andrews from 1937 to 1943, when he was called for war service. He joined the Newcastle Division of the University of Durham shortly after the war as Reader in Politics, where he remained until 1964, when he was appointed to the Chair of Politics and Government at University College, Swansea. Brown returned to Dundee in 1966, to take up the post of Professor of Political Science at Queen's College, Dundee. He continued in this position when the College became the University of Dundee, in 1967. He died 21 May 1979. |
