Steggall, John Edward Aloysius, 1855-1935, mathematician

John Edward Aloysius Steggall ( 1855-1935) was born 19 November 1855, in London. He was the elder son of J.W.B. Steggall M.R.C.S., and was educated at the City of London School, before entering Trinity College, Cambridge. He was master of Clifton College, Bristol, 1878-1879, before accepting the postion of lecturer at the Owens College, Manchester, in 1880.

In 1883, he accepted the Chair of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at University College, Dundee. In 1895, he became Professor of Pure and Applied Mathematics at Dundee. His professional interest was in the theory of numbers and kinematical geometry but he was equally at home in physics as mathematics. He was actively involved in University politics and administration, city and church affairs, and the Dundee School Board. He was also co-founder of the Dundee Social Union.

Steggall retired from University College, Dundee in 1933, after 50 years of service. He was a connoisseur of music, art and architecture, a passable draughtsman and skilled photographer, woodworker and keen cyclist, as well as a classical and linguistic scholar. He died 26 November 1935.
