The post of Dean of Faculty was created at the establishment of the University in 1451. |
Mandate |
In the pre-Reformation University the Dean of Faculty exercised a general superintendence over studies. His main duties lay in supervising, teaching and in examining students for their degrees. He was the effective head of the Faculty and presided at its meetings. After the reformation, he acted as Auditor of the College accounts and Visitor of the College. |
Administrative structure |
In the pre-Reformation University, the Dean of Faculty was elected annually by the masters. He had the advice of four Deputies who were elected along with him. Sometimes a Vice Dean was appointed. The office is now honorary and the appointment is made by the Senate for a period of three years. |
