History

Following the registration of the College under the companies acts in 1879, the Council was established to replace the old Committee of Management. It ceased to exist in 1887 when the College was amalgamated with others to form the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College.

Mandate

The Council was responsible for the general management of the College. It had the power to make and alter bye-laws but these could only be acted upon if confirmed by the institution at a general meeting.

Administrative structure

The Council comprised fifteen councillors elected annually, six of whom were nominated by various corporations of Glasgow namely the Town Council, Merchants' House, the Faculty of Procurators, Trades' House, the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland and the Glasgow Institute of Architects and the other nine of whom were nominated by the members of the Institution.
