Royal College of Science and Technology, Glasgow | Council 1962-1964 |
History |
The Board of Governors assumed control of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College on 26 May 1887. It held its first meeting on 21 January 1887. In 1962, under the terms of the College scheme of that year, the Board was renamed the College Council. |
Mandate |
The Board of Governors was responsible to the Scottish Education Department for the whole management and direction of the affairs of the College. |
Administrative structure |
The Board of Governors comprised thirty governors, two elected by each of the Lord Provost, Magistrates and Council of Glasgow, the Senate of the University of Glasgow, the School Board of Glasgow, the Glasgow City Educational Endowments Board and the Hutchesons' Educational Trust, and one elected by each of the Merchants' House, the Trades' House, the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons, the Faculty of Procurators, the Philosophical Society and the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland. The remainder were representatives of the institutions which had amalgamated in 1887 to form the College or other governors appointed in succession to them. The Director, renamed Principal in 1960, attended meetings of the Board. In 1887 the Board appointed the following standing committees: finance, property, teaching and staff, bursaries, libraries. In 1895 it appointed a Chairman's Committee to consider and report upon matters of urgency. In 1902, the Board established additional standing committees to take charge of the classes connected with particular trades. The committees consisted for the most part of recognised authorities in that trade. In 1904, the committees were reorganised to comprise finance and property, chemistry, engineering, architecture, Allan Glen's School and mathematics, natural philosophy and natural science. The composition of the Board remained unchanged after the affiliation of the College with Glasgow University in 1913. |
