History

The office of Director was created in 1901 following the recognition by the Scotch Education Department of the Glasgow School of Art as the Central Institution for Higher Art Education for Glasgow and the West of Scotland in that year. Formerly the office had been known as that of Headmaster and usage of this term continued until 1909.

Mandate

The Director was the School's chief executive and was responsible to the Board of Governors for the day to day management of the School and its academic policy as advised by the Academic Council. The Director represented the School on the Committee of the Scottish Higher Education Principals and other external bodies.
