History

The Board of Studies appears to have originated as a small committee established by the Staff Council in May 1925. It was replaced in 1973 by the Academic Council.

Mandate

The Board's remit was the direction of studies. It advised the Director on the discharge of duties relating to academic development, standards and course content.

Administrative structure

The Board of Studies comprised the Director, heads of departments and the Women's Warden and Supervisor of the Evening School and met once a month. Each department held staff meetings at regular intervals under the chairmanship of the head of that department. Decisions made at these meetings were reported to the Board of Studies and if supported by the Board then reported to the Board of Governors. It also met with the Board of Governors when necessary.
