History

In 1915, in order to conduct an appeal for public funds for a new building, the Athenaeum Commercial College was incorporated under the Companies Act and became the Glasgow and West of Scotland Commercial College (Incorporated). In 1955 the Glasgow and West of Scotland Commercial College (Incorporated) changed its name to the Scottish College of Commerce. At the same time, however, a new company, Glasgow and West of Scotland Commercial College (Ltd), was formed to preserve the name 'Glasgow and West of Scotland Commercial College'. It was wound up in 1966. In 1964 the Scottish College of Commerce merged with the Royal College of Science and Technology to form the University of Strathclyde, although the company, Scottish College of Commerce (Ltd), was not formally wound up until 1968.

Details of premises

The College was initially housed in buildings on St George's Place (now Nelson Mandela Place), Buchanan Street and West Nile Street, which also housed the Glasgow Athenaeum (Limited) School of Music. An appeal was made in 1919 for funds to have a new building and in 1926 a site was purchased in Pitt Street, Glasgow. Work began on building in 1932 and the College moved in with an official opening on 8 October 1934. The buildings on St George's Place, Buchanan Street and West Nile Street continued to house the Glasgow Athenaeum (Limited) School of Music, which had become the Scottish National Academy of Music in 1929.

Mandate

In 1944 the Scottish Hotel School was established at the College and then in 1946 the Scottish School of Librarianship was established.
