History

Jordanhill College of Education had its origins as the Glasgow Provincial Training College. Between 1920 and 1959 this College had been managed by the Central Executive Committee of the National Committee for the Training of Teachers which had responsibility for all training colleges' finances, buildings, staffing, student numbers and courses. In 1959 this centralised system was abandoned and the Glasgow Provincial Training College was given its own governing body, becoming Jordanhill College of Education. In 1981Hamilton College was absorbed in Jordanhill. In 1992 Jordanhill became an Associate Institution of Strathclyde University and on 1 April 1993 it merged with the University and formed their Faculty of Education.

Mandate

In 1959 the College was given the power to provide pre and in service courses for teachers, community workers and was allowed to award their own certificates and diplomas. In 1965 the Teachers (Education, Training and Certification) (Scotland) Regulations established three teachers' certificates for primary, secondary and further education. This led to the establishment of the School of Further Education at Jordanhill. The 1960s also saw an increase in the college's activities in in-service training, which brought in new groups of students such as speech therapists, social workers and youth and community workers. In 1969 the Audiovisual Media Department was created and 1971 saw the first lecturer in computer education employed. A BEd was introduced in 1966 validated by Glasgow University. From 1975 the Council for National Academic Awards validated a BEd in Physical Education and Human Movement. Between 1959-1976 7 departments emerged: Youth and Community, Social Work, Speech Therapy, In Service, Audiovisual, Modern Studies and the Education of Young Children. The 1980s saw an increase in the number of primary education students. In 1989 an Academic Standards Committee was set up. Between 1981-1993 every course taught at the college was revised and successfully taken to external validation. Many courses were updated to degree and masters degree level and the first doctorates were awarded. 1991 saw the restructuring of the college with 5 schools being set up: the Primary, Secondary, Further Education, Educational Studies and Applied Human Studies Schools. By the late 1980s there came the move to abolish the binary line and give Central Institutions University status. Strathclyde University took over the validation of Jordanhill's courses.
