History

In his will dated 17 September 1833,Thomas Atkinson, a bookseller and stationer, left virtually the whole of his estate to establish an institution for the education of artisans and members of the middle classes. He was especially keen on providing courses in language and literature. Under the Atkinson Institution of Glasgow Act of 1861 the Institution's thirteen trustees were incorporated and continued to accumulate capital.

In 1887 the Institution was amalgamated with Anderson's College, the College of Science and Arts, Allan Glen's Institution and the Young Chair of Technical Chemistry to form the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College (later the Royal College of Science and Technology).

Mandate

After the amalgamation into the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College, the Institution's funds were used as the source of bursaries.

Administrative structure

Thomas Atkinson's estate was left to trustees, who were instructed to accumulate a capital sum and annual income to allow the establishment of the Institution.
