History

The College of Science and Arts traces its origins back to the Glasgow Mechanics' Institution, which was incorporated, under the Companies Act of 1862, 1867 and 1877, as the College of Science and Arts in 1879. In 1887 following evidence given to the Educational Endowment Commission, the College of Science and Arts was amalgamated with Anderson's College, Allan Glen's Institution, the Young Chair of Technical Chemistry and Atkinson's Institution to form the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College (later the Royal College of Science and Technology).

The next two years were to provide more in-depth study depending on the students' occupation. The College also awarded diplomas in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry and naval architecture, which were gained through three years of study and an apprenticeship.
