History

The University of Strathclyde was established by charter in August 1964 and followed the merger of the Royal College of Science and Technology and the Scottish College of Commerce in May 1964. In 1993Jordanhill College of Education was merged into Strathclyde University. In 1998 the University had around 14000 students.

Following the creation of the new University, two new schools of study were created - the School of Arts and Social Studies included economic history, economics, English studies, geography, modern languages, politics, psychology and sociology; the School of Business and Administration began with accountancy, administration, industrial administration and law. Three schools were created to cover engineering: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Naval Architecture; Civil and Mining Engineering and Applied Geology; and Electrical Engineering. Other schools that emerged were the School of Mathematics and Physics, the School of Chemical and Material Sciences, the School of Pharmacy and the School of Biological Sciences. In 1982 these nine schools were to form four faculties - Science, Engineering, Arts and Social Studies and Business Studies. When Jordanhill College of Education merged with the University it formed their new Faculty of Education.

Administrative structure

The charter of the University came into effect in August 1964 and the Senate and the Court, the main decision making bodies, were then established.
