Activity history

From its establishment in 1823, the Glasgow Mechanics' Institution was governed by a committee of mangement. A secretary, elected from the members of the committee, provided administrative support and kept the minutes of its proceedings.

In April 1879, following the registration of the institution under the companies acts, the general management of the institution was vested in a council. The council had the power to make or alter bye-laws but these had to be confirmed by the members of the institution at a general meeting. The active management of the institution's classes lay in the hands of a committee of the members.

In 1887, the institution was amalgamated with Anderson's College, Allan Glen's Institution, Atkinson''s Institution and the Young Chair of Technical Chemistry to form the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. The council, together with the trustees of the other institutions, was responsible for the management of the new college until 26 May 1887. At this date a newly constituted board of governors assumed control.
