Activity history |
The College was set up in 1907 as an association of up to five hundred members. The affairs of the association were managed by a Board of Governors. It was agreed that the first governing body should comprise twenty one governors elected by members of the College from among their own number (comprising nine ladies and twelve gentlemen) and six governors nominated from the Corporation of Glasgow, the School Board of Glasgow, the Merchants' House of Glasgow, the School Board of Govan, and the county councils of Lanark and Renfrew. Dr Paul Rottenburg was elected chairman. There were also to be a number of members co-opted on to committees in order to assist the governors. The first committees were appointed in 1908. The Board of Governors was responsible for the management and direction of the College and was required to present a report of proceedings at the annual general meeting of the association. In 1974, the Board of Governors was restructured and renamed the Governing Body. Nominated members now came from a wider sphere. There was a sharply reduced degree of representation by local councillors and an increase in members from the business community and other employers of students. The first meeting was held on 26 June 1974. From 23 September 1974 the president of the Students' Representative Council became an ex officio governor and another student representative was added on 24 October 1974. The nominated members changed again in the 1976/1977 session to cater for the new local authority restructuring and the establishment of the Strathclyde region. The Governing Body was restructured again in 1989. In 1991 its composition and membership was again discussed. |
