Activity history |
The Glasgow Government School of Design was originally governed, as were other government schools, by the Board of Trade and a Committee of Management representing local subscribers. The Committee was responsible for the whole management and direction of the affairs of the institution, and the appointment of all officers and servants with the exception of those appointed by the Government Council at Somerset House. It had the power to fix the terms of admission of students, and to make bye-laws, regulations and orders as necessary and to appoint subcommittees. An annual meeting was held in April at which office bearers were appointed and the Committee presented a report of proceedings and audited financial statements for the past year. Special general meetings could also be called. In 1852, the government schools of design were taken over by the Department of Practical Art. This department was renamed the Department of Science and Art in 1853 and was located in South Kensington, London. In 1892, following the School's incorporation under the companies acts in that year, a Board of Governors replaced the Committee of Management. Representatives were now elected from the principal public bodies of the City of Glasgow. In 1898, control of the School was transferred again, this time to the Scotch Education Department. In 1901, the School became academically independent and was free to develop its own curriculum and diplomas subject to the approval of the Scotch Education Department (renamed Scottish Education Department in 1918). |
