Activity history

Anderson's Institution was established 9 June 1796 under the will of John Anderson, dated 7 May 1795, and by seal of cause of the City of Glasgow magistrates. The will appointed trustees to manage the affairs of the institution. They had the power to enact or ordain bye-laws, rules and regulations for the better governing of the institution and the development of its legal framework.

In 1828 the trustees decided to change the name of the institution to Anderson's University.

In 1877, the trustees obtained the Anderson's College (Glasgow) Act (40 Vic., c.xii) which made alterations to the original trust deed. Under the terms of the act, the trustees were incorporated, the name of the institution was changed to Anderson's College and the powers and duties of the trustees and managers were remodelled and redefined.

In 1887, in accordance with the scheme of the Royal Commission on Scottish Educational Endowments 1886, the college was split in two. Its medical school (established in 1800) was incorporated as a separate and distinct institution, and was called Anderson's College Medical School. The rest of the college was amalgamated with the College of Science and Arts, Allan Glen's Institution, the Young Chair of Technical Chemistry and Atkinson's Institution to form the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. Responsibility for the management of the college including legal matters passed to the board of governors of the new college on 26 May 1887.
