Activity history |
The institution originated from the will of Thomas Atkinson, dated 17 September 1833. Under the terms of the will, the entire management of the institution including the development of its legal framework was placed in the hands of trustees with the support initially of a clerk appointed by the trustees from the Glasgow law firm of Kerr and Barrie and, from 1882 of a treasurer and secretary, a post which replaced the post of clerk. The institution was incorporated under the Atkinson Institution of Glasgow Act of 1861, although it never achieved physical existence. In 1887, in accordance with the scheme of the Royal Commission on Scottish Educational Endowments 1886, the institution was amalgamated with Anderson's College, the College of Science and Arts, Allan Glen's Institution and the Young Chair of Technical Chemistry to form the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. Responsibility for the development of the legal framework of the institution passed to the board of governors of the new college on 26 May 1887. |
