Activity history

The constitution of the Glasgow Mechanics' Institution was drawn up by a committee appointed for this purpose at a meeting of the mechanics' class at Anderson's Institution in July 1823. Subsequently, on 29 May 1824, under the new constitution, the entire management of the institution including development of the legal framework was vested in a committee of management. The secretary provided administrative support and carried out the wishes of the committee in any legal matters.

In April 1879, the committee, with the help of the secretary, agreed a new constitution and registered the institution under the companies act. It also changed the name of the institution to the College of Science and Arts. The management of the institution including development of the legal framework was now transferred to a council.

In 1887, in accordance with the scheme of the Royal Commission on Scottish Educational Endowments 1886, the institution was amalgamated with Anderson's College, Allan Glen's Institution, the Young Chair of Technical Chemistry and Atkinson's Institution to form the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College. Responsibility for the management of the college including development of the legal framework passed to the board of governors of the new college on 26 May 1887.
