Activity history

In accordance with the scheme of the Royal Commission on Scottish Educational Endowments 1886, the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College was formed in 1887 from the amalgamation of Anderson's College, Allan Glen's Institution, the College of Science and Arts, the Young Chair of Technical Chemistry and Atkinson's Institution. Until 26 May 1887, the former trustees of these institutions were together responsible for establishing the legal framework of the college. After this date, responsibility for the management of the College including its legal framework was vested in the Board of Governors (renamed Council in 1962). The Secretary and Treasurer (renamed Secretary and Director in 1903, Director in 1911 and Principal in 1960), acting on the instructions of the governors, carried out all the administration in connection with the development of the College's legal framework.

In the course of the College's history, the Board of Governors oversaw a number of developments. Firstly, in 1901, the College was designated a central institution. Then, in 1912, after seeking permission from King George V, the Board of Governors changed the College's name to the Royal Technical College. In 1913, in accordance with University Court Ordinance No.12 (1912), the College was affiliated to Glasgow University. In 1956 the College again changed its name, this time to the Royal College of Science and Technology. Finally, in 1964, under the recommendation of the Robbins Committee, the College amalgamated with the Scottish College of Commerce to form the University of Strathclyde.
