Queen Margaret College grew out of the Glasgow Association for the Higher Education of Women and was incorporated under the companies act in 1883. In 1892, the Scottish Universities Commissioners issued an ordinance empowering Scottish universities to make provision for the instruction and graduation of women. Accordingly, in 1892, the College affiliated with Glasgow University becoming its Women's Department. The whole property and endowments of the College passed at this time to the University.
