Activity history |
From around 1873, albums of press cuttings relating to the University were compiled by a number of different administrators. This task was later taken over by the Publications Office, which was created in 1969, and which was also responsible for the compilation of press releases. In 1978, responsibility for both tasks passed to the newly created post of Information and Publicity Officer. In 1987, the Information and Publicity Services Department was formally established, replacing the Information and Publicity Office. It was created as a result of the University's acknowledgement of the need to be outward looking and to attract enquiry and investment. The creation of the Department was also designed to exploit the publicity that the City of Glasgow was receiving leading up to being the city of culture in 1990. The Department's role was to publicise the University, disseminate information on its behalf and provide the University community with advice and expertise on publicity. It provided journalists with information about the University and the activities of departments, staff and students and, when appropriate, put journalists in touch with relevant members of staff. To assist with this, it published lists of University staff and their areas of expertise, known as the media directory. It also provided a cuttings service, and brought together into one collection all the albums of press cuttings compiled previously by various administrators. In 1996 the Department was renamed Publicity Services. From 1991 to 2004, the Department was part of the External Relations and Marketing Division of the Central Administration Planning Unit. In January 2004, the University's administration was restructured, and Publicity Services became part of the External Relations and Marketing Division of Administration, Information and Management Services. |
