Activity history

The first real provision of welfare services for students was in 1907 when advisers of studies were created in each faculty. These were academic staff whose primary function was to advise students on academic matters. Where necessary, however, they could also advise on social and personal issues. During the twentieth century, as other specialised student support services were created within the University, the advisers of studies became the first line of approach for students experiencing difficulties and they referred such students to other support services as appropriate.

In 1921, a Student Welfare Scheme was established to raise money to reinvigorate student life by funding an extension to the Men's Union, improved sports facilities and halls of residence. This was administered by the Senate Student Welfare Committee.

From 1892 until 1974, women students had their own adviser to whom they could turn for help. In 1892, when Queen Margaret College, Glasgow had amalgamated with the University of Glasgow becoming its Women's Department, women students could turn for help to the College Secretary (renamed Mistress in 1909). In 1935, on the closure of Queen Margaret College, the University post of General Adviser to Women Students was created. This was subsequently renamed Senior Tutor to Women Students. It was discontinued in 1974 on the creation of the post of Counselling Officer.

The Students' Representative Council, which was established in 1885, had, from the outset, provided advice and support on a wide range of issues including accommodation, personal problems and financial and legal matters, as well as campaigning generally for student welfare. In 1975, it set up a Legal Advice Service staffed by lecturers and senior students in the Law Faculty, which offered advice on all manner of legal problems such as difficulties with landlords or criminal charges. Later, in the mid 1980s, it established a Welfare Office. This was renamed the Welfare and Advice Centre in the 1990s. It offered free and confidential advice and information for all Glasgow University students. In 1993, the Council published a welfare handbook. In 2004, the Council had two professional Welfare Advisers.

Other services which offered help and guidance on student welfare related issues included the University Health Service, which was established in 1948, the University Chaplaincy, established in 1961, the Student Counselling and Advisory Service, established in 1974, and the Special Needs Service, established in 1995. There has also for a number of years been a Welfare Officer specifically for overseas students. Until 1999, this officer, known as the International Students Adviser, was based in the Office for International Programmes. From 1999, the Adviser was based in the Student Recruitment and Admissions Service. The Adviser helps students with the practical aspects of living and studying in Glasgow and liaises with other individuals and organisations with similar aims.

Between 1964 and 1991, student welfare matters fell within the remit of the Senate Student Health and Welfare Committee. This was replaced by the Student Welfare Committee in 1991. In 2002, this, in turn, was replaced by the Student Support and Development Committee, a joint committee of Court and Senate.
