Activity history

The first formal provision of a Special Needs Service was in 1995, when, in response to the Disability Discrimination Act of the same year, a part-time Special Needs Adviser was appointed. Before this, students with special needs could get help and advice from a number of different sources including Student Advisers, Course Co-ordinators, Heads of Departments, the Student Counselling Service, the Library and the Students' Representative Council. The Special Needs Advisory Service was part of the Staff and Student Support Division of the Central Administration Planning Unit. In 2004, the University's administration was reorganised and the Service, now called the Special Needs Service, became part of the Staff and Student Resources Division of Administrative, Information and Management Services. In 2004, there were three Special Needs Advisers as well as an IT Special Needs Adviser within the Library. All matters relating to special needs initially fell within the remit of the Senate Student Welfare Committee. In 2002 this was replaced by the Student Support and Development Committee, a joint committee of Court and Senate.

The Special Needs Advisers were available as the first point of contact for any matriculated student or potential student with a disability or special need, or any parent or representative of a student. Together with the IT Adviser in the Library, and in liaison with the Heads of Academic Departments, Course Co-ordinators, the Teaching and Learning Service, the Student Learning Service and other University support services, they could offer a range of provisions and specialist support including special arrangements for examinations. Any special examination arrangements agreed with the Special Needs Service had to be approved by the Clerk of Senate and transmitted to the Examinations Officer in the Registry to be put into practice.
