University Health Service 1948 to date

In February 1945, in order to detect all cases of tuberculosis, the Senate proposed that all students be obliged to undergo a medical examination. It was remitted to the Principal and Deans Committee to nominate a committee to consider the proposal. The result was the establishment of the Medical Examination of Students Committee. As a result of the reports of this committee and the recommendations of the Students' Representative Council, the Court approved in 1948 the appointment of a full-time Medical Officer and agreed that radiographic examination of students be compulsory. Before 1948 there had been part-time Medical Officers but the role of the new full-time appointment was to co-ordinate the work of a Student Health Service for the benefit of all matriculated students. The Health Service was provided by the University outside the National Health Service and was free of charge. The Medical Examination of Students Committee was renamed the Student Health Committee in 1948. In the 1964/1965 session, this was renamed the Student Health and Welfare Committee. In 1991, it was renamed the Student Welfare Committee, which was, in turn, replaced in 2002 by the Student Support and Development Committee, a joint committee of Court and Senate. In 1990, the Health Service was renamed the University Health Service.

In 1991, the University's administration was organised in planning units. The Health Service fell under the Staff and Student Support Division of the Central Administration Planning Unit. In 2004, following another reorganisation of the administration, the Health Service became part of the Staff and Student Resources Division of Administrative, Information and Management Services.
