Activity history |
Before 1974, there was no formal counselling service within the University. The Students' Representative Council, which was established in 1885, had, from the outset, provided advice and support to students on a wide range of issues including personal problems. From 1892, when Queen Margaret College, Glasgow amalgamated with the University of Glasgow becoming its Women's Department, women students could turn for advice to the College Secretary (renamed Mistress in 1909). In 1935, on the closure of Queen Margaret College, the University post of General Adviser to Women Students was created. This was subsequently renamed Senior Tutor to Women Students. A limited amount of counselling was also available for students from the Advisers of Studies, created in each faculty in 1907, and through the faculty tutor scheme in which all the faculties took part. In 1973, the Senate appointed a Topic Committee on Advisory Services to consider and report on all advisory services within the University including counselling. As a result of its considerations, the Senate recommended in 1974 that a Counselling Officer be appointed. The Counselling Officer was to replace the Senior Tutor to Women Students. In October 1974, the Senate set up the Counselling and Advisory Services Committee and appointed a Student Counsellor. A Counselling and Advisory Service to students was established and began operating in the 1975/1976 session. In December 1976, the Senate resolved that the Counselling and Advisory Services Committee be disbanded and that the Student Counsellor should henceforth report to the Student Health and Welfare Committee. In 1991, the Student Health and Welfare Committee was replaced by the Student Welfare Committee and in 2002, the Student Welfare Committee was replaced by the Student Support and Development Committee, a joint committee of Court and Senate. In 1991, the University's administration was organised in planning units. The Counselling and Advisory Service fell under the Staff and Student Support Division of the Central Administration Planning Unit. In 2004, following another reorganisation of the administration, the service became part of the Staff and Student Resources Division of Administrative, Information and Management Services. The Counselling and Advisory Service offered counselling for all matriculated students of the University as well as advice to staff, parents and others concerned about a particular student. It liaised with academic departments, the University Medical Officer, the International Student Officer and others. The Service was an organisational member of the Confederation of Scottish Counselling Agencies (COSCA). |
