Activity history |
A nursery play group was set up at 61/63 Southpark Avenue in 1967. It was run by the Glasgow University Play Group Association, which received grants from the University. The play group took children on a part-time basis only. In June 1974, a proposal for a University nursery for the children of staff and students was received from the Nursery Action Group and Women in Action. A committee was appointed by the Court to consider the proposal but it rejected it. The proposal was reconsidered and again rejected in May 1977. Instead, the Court agreed to fund, together with the Students' Representative Council, a small number of places in the play group for children of full-time students suffering hardship. In September 1990, the Court appointed a working party to reconsider the case for childcare facilities for staff and students. The working party submitted its report in February 1992. As a result, the Court decided to take over the tenancy of 61/63 Southpark Avenue from the Play Group Association and to operate a nursery providing full-time childcare facillities for the children of staff and students. It established the Steering Committee on Childcare Facilities to coordinate and implement the recommendations of the working party and to advise the Court on management, staffing and costing and pricing policy. The steering committee established the Standing Committee on Childcare Facilities to be responsible for considering applications for places and for allocating subsidies. Means testing was to be applied. The nursery opened in November 1992. In 2000, the nursery relocated to larger accommodation in Hillhead Street and, as a result, was able to offer extra places. During University vacations, the Court delegated responsibility for decisions regarding the nursery to the University Management Group (renamed Senior Management Group in 2004). In 1991, the University's administration was organised in planning units. The nursery fell under the Staff and Student Support Division of the Central Administration Planning Unit. In 2004, following another reorganisation of the administration, the nursery became part of the Staff and Student Resources Division of Administrative, Information and Management Services. |
