Activity history |
The University first became involved in providing a careers service in 1903 as a response to increasing uncertainty among students about future employment caused by the long depression at the beginning of the century. The University responded by setting up a Senate Appointments Committee in January 1903. Its purpose was to help graduates find work. It did this by collecting and communicating information regarding appointments suitable for students and graduates. It instituted a register of candidates for appointments which included a brief statement of their qualifications and appointments desired by them. Each applicant was charged a registration fee. Students' names were retained on the register for one year unless the student obtained a place before that. The Committee also invited those concerned in making appointments to send in a description of vacant posts. Notices regarding the register were printed in the faculty syllabuses and the University calendar. A noticeboard was also put up for jobs and notices. An Appointments Officer was appointed in 1957 to run an Appointments Office. In about 1971 the Appointments Office was renamed the Careers and Appointments Service and in June 1994 it was renamed the Careers Service. Its remit was to supply information both concerning further full-tme education and first employment. The facilities it provided included employers' literature, commercial directories, careers information sheets, video cassettes, careers talks, careers conventions, personal counselling, introductions to employers and employment statistics. In the 1989/1990 session, the Appointments Committee was replaced by the Careers and Appointments Committee. In 1994, it was renamed the Careers Service Committee. In 1996, a Careers Service Advisory Board was established as a subcommittee of the Education Committee. It was to meet once a term. Once every academic session the Board was to be metamorphosed into a Careers Service Committee with the addition of a wider representation of internal and external interests. The remit of the Careers Advisory Board was to advise the Director of the Careers Service on, and facilitate the development of, communications and linkages between the Careers Service and the wider academic community of the University. The remit of the Careers Service Committee was to consider the report of the Careers Service, to convey views on the report to the Director of the Careers Service and to the Education Committee and to advise the Director and the Education Committee on the University's relationship to the world of employment. In 1991, the University's administration was organised in planning units. The Careers Service fell under the External Relations and Marketing Division of the Central Administration Planning Unit. In 2004, following another reorganisation of the administration, the service became part of the Staff and Student Resources Division of Administrative, Information and Management Services. |
