Activity history

The granting of financial aid to students by the governors of the institution was continued after the Watt Institution and School of Arts became Heriot-Watt College. The granting of financial aid for study and living expenses was also provided by other bodies such as local education authorities and trusts or bequests provided by individuals. The 1908 Education (Scotland) Act empowered local education authorities to grant bursaries to enable students to attend either the day or the evening classes. Entrance through scholarships was also developed.

Conditions were attached to some forms of financial aid. For example, the student receiving aid would have to study a technical subject, apply for aid to travel abroad to study, or apply for funds for further study or research. Financial aid could last for just one year's study and have to be re-applied for or would apply for the full course of study. This depended on the type of financial aid that was applied for. Some types of aid applied solely to students attending evening classes in a technical subject and wishing to attend day classes with the aim of taking the College diploma. Some bursaries and scholarships that were offered provided free education as well as living costs and funding for equipment and books. Some of the prizes awarded by funds held by Heriot-Watt College provided financial aid for students continuing to study in the year after receiving the prize. Some of these prizes provided scholarships or research grants.

From 1955/1956 a bursary was offered to recruit students to train as teachers.
