Activity history |
Before 1858, the only involvement of the students in the government of the University was in the election of the Rector. From the foundation of the University, the Rector was elected annually by the whole body of the members of the University, masters and students alike, voting in their four nations. The Universities (Scotland) Act, 1858 entrusted the election of the Rector to the matriculated students alone. From this date, the Rector became mainly concerned with representing the students on the University Court. Women students became eligible to vote for the Rector in 1892 when Queen Margaret College became the Women's Department of the University. The 1858 act also gave the body of graduates of the University a certain share in the administration by the establishment of a General Council. The Council considered all questions affecting the well being and prosperity of the University and could make representation on any such question to the University Court. A Students' Representative Council was instituted in 1885 with the aims of representing the students in such matters as affected their interests and affording a recognised means of communication between the students and the University authorities. It obtained statutory recognition by an ordinance (Ordinance No.60. General, No.22) issued by the commissioners under the terms of the Universities (Scotland) Act, 1889. The ordinance gave the Council the power to petition the Senate on matters of teaching and discipline and to petition the University Court on any other matter affecting the students. All matriculated students of the University were eligible to vote in the election of representatives. Women students were represented from 1894 by the Queen Margaret College Students' Representative Council, which was organised on the same footing as the university men's Student Representative Council but remained a completely separate organisation until 1898 when the two were amalgamated. Students were also involved at departmental level. From the 1960s, students in every class were represented by one or more class representatives who sat on a staff/student liaison committee, the purpose of which was to convey matters of student concern to the Head of Department. |
