Activity history

Since at no stage in its history did the institution award degrees, there were no graduation ceremonies to be organised. However, it did hold annual ceremonies at which the committee of management (replaced in 1879 by the council) distributed college diplomas and prizes, and the certificates and prizes awarded by the Society of Arts, the government department of science and art and the City and Guilds of London Institute. The ceremonies were organised by the secretary and, from 1879, the principal under the direction of the committee of management. A local dignitary usually presided at the ceremony. Lists of students receiving certificates and prizes were published by the committee in the annual reports.
