Activity history

From the foundation of the School in 1845, a ceremony called the annual examination was held each year. At this ceremony, prizes were distributed. Arrangements for the ceremony were discussed and agreed by the Committee of Management (renamed Board of Governors in 1892) and carried out by the Headmaster. From 1873, arrangements for the ceremony were handled by the Secretary and Treasurer who also drew up a list of prizes awarded which was published in the School's prospectus. From 1943, the responsibility for drawing up the list of prizes passed to the newly created post of Registrar.

From at least the 1930s, an annual ceremony was also held for the distribution of diplomas. The arrangements and format of the ceremony were discussed and agreed by the Board of Studies, which was established in 1925. This responsibility was inherited by the Academic Council in 1973 when it replaced the Board of Studies. The Students' Representative Council, established in 1941, and the School Council, established in 1969, also discussed arrangements and, on occasion, made requests for changes. All the arrangements for the ceremony, including posting diplomas to absent students, were carried into effect by the Secretary and Treasurer.
