Activity history |
Since at no stage in its history did the College award degrees, there were no graduation ceremonies to be organised. However, it did hold ceremonies for the presentation of its diplomas, certificates and prizes. Initially, class prizes and the certificates and prizes of the Government Department of Science and Art and the City and Guilds of London Institute were distributed in the classes by the respective professors and lecturers. This was organised by the Teaching and Staff Committee of the Board of Governors. In 1894, however, the Board of Studies recommended that there should be a public distribution of class prizes at the end of each session. Arrangements for this were remitted to the convenor and secretary of the Teaching and Staff Committee. The first such ceremony was held in May 1894. The chairman of the governors presided and distributed the prizes. Later, and certainly by 1901, diplomas and prizes were presented by the chairman at the annual meeting of the governors in January. Arrangements for this occasion were handled by the Secretary and Treasurer (renamed Secretary and Director in 1903 and Director in 1911). In December 1921, on the recommendation of the Chairman's Committee, a special meeting of the Board of Studies was held for the distribution of diplomas and, in 1923, the governors appointed a committee to make arrangements for the public presentation of diplomas at the end of October. In 1913, following the affiliation of the College to Glasgow University, students could matriculate and receive Glasgow University degrees in applied science. Those who did receive university degrees attended the graduation ceremonies organised by the University. |
