Activity history |
Since at no stage in its history could the institution award degrees, there were no degree examinations to administer. However, the students were assessed regularly throughout the session with regular home exercises as well as a searching written examination. This was conducted once a year at the end of the session to test the knowledge acquired by the students in the course of that year, and diplomas and certificates of merit were awarded to successful candidates. The examination questions were prepared and marked by the visiting committee of the trustees, which was composed of gentlemen engaged in the textile manufactures. The secretary arranged for the printing of the questions and provided general administrative support. The results of the examinations were recorded in the minutes of the visiting committee. In 1879, the visiting committee resolved to hold an oral examination of the students in addition to the written examination. The questions were to be set by the visiting committee and the examination was to be conducted by the instructor in the presence of the visiting committee. The teaching committee, established in 1896 to replace the visiting committee, took over the responsibility for the setting and marking of the college's examinations. Examination results were henceforth recorded in the minutes of the teaching committee. The secretary continued to provide administrative support. In 1898, as preparation for the end of session examination, preliminary examinations were held at regular intervals throughout the session. After each examination, a member of the teaching committee went over the papers with the students. In 1901, the teaching committee engaged external examiners to prepare questions and declare the results of the examinations. Students of the college were also eligible to sit the examinations of two other organisations. From 1880, they could sit the examinations for the certificates of merit and prizes awarded by the City and Guilds of London Institute. These examinations took place at the close of the session. In 1881, members of the visiting committee were appointed to conduct these examinations on behalf of the City and Guilds of London Institute. Students taking classes in the design department, which was established in 1898, could also sit the examinations of the government Department of Science and Art. |
