Activity history

Students were assessed regularly throughout the session by home exercises and oral and written examinations, which the professors and lecturers of each class were responsible for administering. At the close of the session, certificates of honour and prizes were awarded to the most deserving students. Since at no stage in its history could the institution award degrees, there were no degree examinations to administer. However, students were eligible to sit the examinations of a number of other organisations. Medical students could sit the examinations of any of the royal colleges, science students could sit the examinations of the government department of science and art, and music students could sit the examinations of the Society of Arts. Students could sit both these latter examinations in the institution itself. It is assumed that the managers, supported by the institution's secretary and the secretary of the popular evening class committee, were responsible for their administration.

Examinations for scholarships and bursaries awarded by the institution and the department of science and art were also held in the institution.
