Activity history

Until 1879, the college only provided evening classes and did not systematically assess students. Examinations were optional. Students who had attended the courses of natural philosophy, chemistry and mathematics for two sessions could choose to sit the examinations of the Society of Arts or the government department of science and art. Successful candidates were awarded certificates. From 1876, students choosing to sit examinations took the examinations of the department of science and art rather than the Society of Arts.

In 1879, the college instituted a new three year course of instruction, on the completion of which students were awarded diplomas. These diplomas were regulated by the examinations of the department of science and art. Students taking the diplomas had to sit the department's examinations each year. By 1883, if not earlier, examinations, whether of the department of science and art or of the City and Guilds of London Institute, were compulsory for all students except those in the arithmetic class. Class examinations were also held and weekly exercises prescribed by the principal and lecturers. College medals and prizes were awarded on the results of these.

The administration of the examinations was handled by the college secretary, under the direction of the committee of management and, from 1879, the council in conjunction with the Society of Arts, the government department of science and art and the City and Guilds of London Institute. The committee published examination results in the annual reports.
