Activity history

In the early years of the University, course administration was carried out mainly by the Faculty of Arts. This was responsible for the supervision and direction of the education of the students. As head of the Faculty of Arts, the Dean of Faculties was responsible for controlling the different stages of the students' education including announcing the times of classes. Public notices for such matters as appropriate times for beginning to read books in the course of teaching were posted by the Bedellus. Records of students' absence and late arrivals were kept by the regents or masters in the course of teaching. With the growth of more faculties, each faculty became responsible for its own course administration and timetabling. The setting of times for classes was organised at departmental level. From the late twentieth century, this was done in conjunction with the University's Central Room Booking Service. From at least the 18th century, class lists were prepared by the Clerk of Senate and issued to the professors and lecturers. These were used to assist with the collection of fees. The duty for compiling class lists passed to the Registry in 1911 by order of the Court. Faculties and departments were responsible for checking the accuracy of the Registrar's data. From the mid nineteenth century, departments began compiling class registers or class roll books.
