Activity history |
Admissions criteria were set by the General Assembly of the Church. All candidates had first to notify the clerk of their local presbytery of their intention to train for the ministry. The clerk then passed on the names of all candidates together with letters of commendation to the secretary of the General Assembly College Committee (renamed in 1930 the Committee on Education for the Ministry) recommending them for admission to the entrance examination. This was held up until 1969 and was compulsory. In 1944, by a decision of the General Assembly a Central Selection Board was appointed by the committee, with panels operating at the four centres of training. The Glasgow panel comprised the College Principal and a couple of professors as well as ministers from the Glasgow area. This Board interviewed all the candidates and issued certificates of approval to the presbyteries which then nominated candidates for admission to the entrance examination. The arrangements for the examination were handled by the Board of Examination up until 1901 and, from 1901, by the College Committee. The marks obtained by candidates were transmitted to the Clerk of Senate who then transmitted them to the Senate. Successful candidates were then admitted to the College. From 1970, candidates attended a selection school arranged by the Central Selection Board instead of sitting an entrance examination. Some candidates also had to undergo a medical examination.
